On January 27, 2025, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the positive strides made in improving China-India relations, particularly following the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan last year. During a meeting with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in Beijing, Wang Yi underscored that interactions at all levels have been actively fostering bilateral ties. He pointed to the earnest implementation of key agreements reached by the two leaders, signaling progress in strengthening the relationship.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the two nations have “earnestly implemented the important consensus” outlined during the Kazan meeting. Wang Yi urged both sides to seize the opportunity for enhanced cooperation, emphasizing the importance of mutual understanding, support, and achievement. He stressed that the future of China-India relations should be defined by trust and collaboration, rather than suspicion and alienation.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s statement further noted that improving ties between the two countries is aligned with the fundamental interests of both nations and their peoples. It also highlighted the broader benefits for the global South, asserting that the partnership between two of Asia’s ancient civilizations contributes to regional and global peace, stability, development, and prosperity.

At the BRICS Summit in October 2024, PM Modi conveyed to President Xi that sustainable India-China relations must be based on three principles: mutual trust, mutual respect, and mutual sensitivity. This sentiment was reiterated in their bilateral meeting—the first at the delegation level in nearly five years. Modi emphasized that maintaining peace and stability along the India-China border remains a top priority for both nations, with mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity serving as the foundation for a constructive and stable future relationship.

The ongoing dialogue between China and India underscores the shared commitment to overcoming challenges and building a partnership that benefits both countries, while contributing to broader regional and global objectives. With these efforts, the relationship between the two nations is poised to advance on a positive trajectory, enhancing cooperation for mutual prosperity and security.
