Student Visa Interview Pause to End Soon, Says U.S. State Department

The United States government has announced that the temporary pause on student visa interviews will end “sooner rather than later,” urging applicants to continue their visa application process and regularly check for the resumption of normal services.

This pause was initiated following a directive by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, requiring U.S. diplomatic missions worldwide to temporarily halt student visa interviews in order to implement enhanced scrutiny of applicants’ social media activity.

Tammy Bruce, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, addressed the issue during a daily briefing, assuring that while delays may currently affect appointment availability, students should remain proactive in monitoring the online system for openings. “I would not be recommending that if this was going to be weeks or months,” she stated, underscoring the likelihood of a relatively swift resumption of interview scheduling.

This development is significant for countries like India, which sends the largest number of international students to the United States for higher education. Bruce’s remarks are expected to be closely watched by prospective Indian students and other international applicants.

The heightened scrutiny follows political unrest on U.S. college campuses related to Israel’s invasion of Gaza, which occurred in response to the Hamas terrorist attacks in October 2023. The Trump administration expanded the vetting process for foreign students amid these events, contributing to the temporary suspension.

Applicants are encouraged to remain patient, continue their visa application process, and frequently check the official scheduling portals for new interview availability.
