Sunny Deol is making his debut in a lead role in South Indian cinema with Jaat, directed by Gopichand Malineni and produced by Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory. As excitement builds around the project, Sunny reflects on the evolving phase of his career. He shares that stardom, for him, is about loving his craft and staying grounded. He believes in doing his work sincerely and moving on, finding joy when audiences appreciate his performances.
Known for his powerful action roles, Sunny says he doesn’t specifically seek out action films—it all depends on the story. If action fits naturally into the narrative and the character suits him, he takes it on, regardless of the physical demands. Age, he adds, is just a number and not something he worries about.
Speaking on how South Indian audiences perceive Bollywood stars, Sunny says it varies from person to person. He’s met several South filmmakers who are fans of his older films, and some of his movies have even been remade in the South. Ultimately, the appeal lies in how compelling a story is.
Although he once dabbled in directing and producing, Sunny admits it diverted his focus from acting. Now, with his acting career flourishing again, he’s happy staying in front of the camera. When asked about playing a villain, he says he hasn’t received any such offers but is open to portraying any character that fits the story. While he’d love to break the image audiences have of him, he acknowledges that change comes with risk, one that producers must be willing to take.
After the massive success of Gadar 2, Sunny is enjoying what many call a golden phase. He recalls how people initially called the film dated, but the audience’s overwhelming love proved otherwise. He believes this marks a return to rooted storytelling and jokes that ever since their daughter-in-law entered the family, luck seems to be shining on the Deols—with him, Bobby, and their father Dharmendra all landing exciting new projects.
Clarifying rumors of a three-film deal, Sunny says he hasn’t signed any such agreement with Mythri or People Media Factory. However, if he enjoys working with a team and the story excites him, he’s always open to collaborating again.
Sunny Deol’s grounded nature and passion for acting continue to resonate with fans, and with Jaat on the way, he’s proving that there’s plenty more to come in his cinematic journey.
