Lawyer Prashant Bhushan shocked everyone in June, when he made controversial Tweets on the Supreme Court on June 27th and June 29th. This did not go down well with the SC, after which Prashant Bhushan was found guilty of Contempt of Court.
After hearings of the case, the Supreme Court, on August 20th, gave Prashant time till August 24th, to apologize to the Supreme Court, for the comments that he had made. However, Prashanth released a public statement that he wouldn’t apologize to the court because he expressed his personal beliefs on Twitter, which he still continued to believe. He said that it’s not worth apologising if it’s not true and if he does not mean it, which he didn’t.
The Supreme Court has now given its verdict on Prashant Bhushan, and has fined him with Re.1. If he doesn’t pay this to the court by September 15th, then Prashant will be imprisoned for 3 months, and his practice will be banned for 3 years. The Supreme Court also said that its judgement is based on the advice that Attorney General K.K. Venugopal had given to the esteemed institution.
It has also been made clear to Prashant that a man cannot be excused even he doesn hundreds of good deeds and just one mistake. The Supreme Court further said that it is giving a warning to Prashant this time, because his comments were based on his beliefs and could actually help the court review some of its situations. It has also wanted Prashant to not repeat such behavior once again.
