As summer holidays approach, Indian interest in the Schengen region has surged, with visa applications increasing by 29% compared to last year, according to data from the visa-processing platform Atlys. This rise highlights the enduring allure of Europe’s sun-kissed coastlines, rich history, and vibrant cultures, particularly among younger travellers.

Countries like Portugal, Greece, Spain, and Italy have become top destinations for those seeking entry into the Schengen area, thanks to their strong tourism infrastructure and welcoming atmospheres. The report shows that Gen Z and millennial travellers are leading this growth, with a 23.5% increase in visa requests from these age groups compared to the previous year.

“We are seeing a new wave of Indian travellers who are more intentional and curious about their experiences,” said Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys. “Travel is no longer just about sightseeing; it’s about immersing in cultures, connecting with locals, and creating meaningful memories.”

While cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru remain major hubs for outbound travel, interest is spreading to smaller cities. Schengen visa applications from tier-two cities, such as Pune, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh, have risen by 17.8%, indicating Europe’s growing appeal beyond India’s traditional urban centres.

For luxury travellers, France, Italy, and Switzerland continue to be top choices, offering experiences like Tuscany’s vineyards and Switzerland’s lakeside resorts. Meanwhile, adventure seekers are increasingly drawn to Austria, Slovenia, and northern Spain, where alpine sports, hiking, and nature escapes are gaining popularity. The Mediterranean climate, with summer temperatures ranging from 20–30°C, offers ideal conditions for outdoor adventures, long daylight hours, and flexible itineraries.
