Suriya and Karthi’s Films Face OTT Roadblocks Ahead of Diwali

Share

For the past few years, brothers Suriya and Karthi have built a strong following across languages with their content-driven films. While they may not have delivered big box office blockbusters recently, their movies usually carry strong buzz. But now, both are caught in a tricky situation due to OTT deal issues, which are delaying their theatrical release plans.

Suriya’s much-awaited Karuppu was initially planned for a Diwali release. Though shooting is complete, the makers haven’t locked the date yet. The reason? An OTT deal hasn’t materialized at the expected price. Despite multiple negotiations with top platforms, the offers haven’t matched the makers’ expectations, leaving the film’s release uncertain.

Karthi is facing a similar problem. His Sardar 2, a sequel carrying strong hype, was also aiming for a Diwali release. But even with the buzz of being a sequel, the film hasn’t managed to close a profitable OTT deal, causing delays. Adding to that, his other film Va Vathiyar has also been put on hold due to both OTT and financial hurdles.

According to industry insiders, OTT platforms are offering far lower prices than what producers are expecting, making it difficult to move forward with release strategies. Without strong non-theatrical business, theatrical releases are becoming risky.

Though both films are ready for Diwali, the lack of OTT backing is creating uncertainty. This has left fans disappointed, as they may miss out on festival releases from the popular brothers. If even star heroes like Suriya and Karthi are facing such hurdles, it raises questions about the struggles smaller films must be going through.
