Despite being a leading star in Tamil cinema, Suriya has struggled to deliver a blockbuster in recent years. His last two films, Kanguva and Retro, not only failed to meet expectations but also turned out to be major financial disappointments.
Suriya aimed to bounce back with his upcoming film Karuppu, a commercial mass-masala entertainer designed as a safe bet for box office success. The film was originally slated for a Diwali release but missed the festive window due to unforeseen delays. Missing Diwali, a prime period for mass films, deprived Suriya of a golden opportunity to maximize openings.
In a recent interview, Karuppu’s director RJ Balaji confirmed that the film had initially planned for a Diwali release but instead opted to release a song during the festival. This year, Tamil cinema saw no major star-studded releases for Diwali. Films like Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dude, Dhruv Vikram’s Bison, and Harish Kalyan’s Diesel were the only releases, none catering to B and C center audiences. Similarly, Telugu cinema also lacked significant releases during Diwali. Had Karuppu released as planned, it could have garnered massive openings in both Tamil and Telugu markets.
Even last year, Suriya’s Kanguva missed the Diwali slot and released on November 14, ultimately becoming a box office failure. Many believe that a Diwali release could have at least secured strong initial collections.
Overall, Suriya has now missed two consecutive Diwali releases. While Kanguva’s delay impacted him significantly, fans and industry watchers are keen to see how Karuppu’s postponed release will perform at the box office.
