Kollywood star Suriya is currently working on two very different films. One is a socially driven drama titled Karuppu, while the other is tentatively titled Suriya 46. Karuppu is being directed by R.J. Balaji, and Suriya 46 is under the direction of Venky Atluri. Both films are designed as a mix of class and commercial elements.
Initially, the makers had set clear release dates for the two films: Karuppu for Diwali 2025, and Suriya 46 for May 2026. However, recent reports indicate significant changes to the schedule. Karuppu has reportedly run into issues regarding its OTT rights, prompting the producers to consider pushing its release to April 14, 2026.
If this happens, releasing Suriya 46 the following month will not be feasible. Typically, the industry ensures at least a three-month gap between two releases of the same star to maximize box office potential and audience engagement. As a result, Suriya 46 could now be postponed to July or August 2026.
While this may disappoint fans anticipating back-to-back releases, the production teams are making these decisions to optimize market potential and ensure both films succeed. For now, Suriya fans will have to wait a little longer to see him on the big screen.
Both films, however, are already generating significant hype. Karuppu will showcase Suriya in a different, socially relevant role, while Suriya 46 is expected to feature him in a mass, commercial avatar. These diverse roles promise to offer a complete cinematic experience for his fans.
At this stage, Suriya needs a solid hit. His recent releases have not performed up to expectations, with films like Kanguva and Retro failing at the box office despite high anticipation. In this context, these two upcoming films are crucial for his career trajectory.
