Syria, Israel Hold US-Mediated Ceasefire Talks in Paris

Syria’s foreign affairs chief, Assad Hassan al-Shibani, met with an Israeli delegation in Paris to discuss measures aimed at reducing tensions and stabilizing southern Syria, the state news agency SANA reported.

The talks, held under U.S. mediation, focused on reviving the 1974 disengagement agreement, ensuring non-interference in Syria’s internal affairs, and reinforcing mechanisms to monitor the ceasefire in Sweida province, a key flashpoint in the country’s south.

According to SANA, the meeting forms part of broader diplomatic efforts to safeguard Syria’s territorial integrity and enhance regional security. Earlier this month, al-Shibani met in Amman with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack, where the three parties agreed to establish a Syrian-Jordanian-U.S. working group to support Damascus’ efforts to maintain the Sweida ceasefire and pursue a comprehensive resolution to the Syrian crisis.

The renewed diplomatic activity follows December’s developments, when Israel deployed ground forces into the demilitarized buffer zone along the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government. The area, established under the 1974 disengagement accord, is monitored by the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF). Israel has since captured the Syrian-controlled side of Mount Hermon, further raising concerns over stability in the region.
