Chennai, March 26, 2025 – The Tamil film industry is mourning the untimely demise of actor and director Manoj Bharathiraja, who passed away at the age of 48. Manoj breathed his last at his residence in Chetpet, Chennai, on Tuesday at approximately 4 PM. He is survived by his wife, Ashwathi (alias Nandana), and their two daughters, Arshitha and Mathivathani.
According to reports, Manoj had recently undergone a bypass surgery and was recuperating at home when he tragically passed away. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves across the Tamil film fraternity, with numerous celebrities, colleagues, and fans expressing their heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin extended his condolences, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Manoj Bharathiraja, son of esteemed actor and director Bharathiraja. Manoj made a remarkable debut with Taj Mahal, directed by his father, and went on to carve a niche for himself in the industry with films such as Samuthiram, Alli Arjuna, and Varushamellam Vasantham. He also explored his passion for direction.”
Several renowned personalities from the Tamil film industry, including Sarathkumar, Khushboo Sundar, director Venkat Prabhu, and director Halitha Shameem, have paid tribute to Manoj and expressed their condolences to his family.
Manoj Bharathiraja stepped into the film industry with the 1999 romantic drama Taj Mahal, which featured a musical score by the legendary A.R. Rahman. He also showcased his musical talent by lending his voice to the song Eechi Elumichi in the film’s soundtrack. Over the years, he played significant roles in films such as Maha Nadigan, Simbu’s Maanaadu, and Karthi’s Viruman. In addition to acting, Manoj ventured into filmmaking and directed the 2023 film Margazhi Thingal. His last on-screen appearance was in the Prime Video series Snakes and Ladders.
