Shaneil Deo on Crafting Dacoit: A Gritty, Emotional Debut

Director Shaneil Deo’s transition from cinematographer to filmmaker with his debut Dacoit marks an interesting and passionate journey. In a recent interaction, he revealed that the film took nearly three years to shape, with strong creative support from his long-time friend Adivi Sesh.

The script evolved through a highly collaborative process, with continuous changes across schedules to preserve the emotional depth of the story. Instead of sticking to rigid plot structures, Shaneil focused on the journey of the lead character Hari, encouraging natural performances and improvisation on set.

Stylistically, Dacoit is crafted with a gritty neo-western tone, deliberately moving away from glossy urban visuals. Shaneil aimed for a raw and grounded aesthetic, drawing early inspiration from films like Hell or High Water, while still creating a unique identity. The emphasis was always on emotional intensity rather than conventional genre elements.

Interestingly, he described the antagonist in Dacoit not as a single character, but as the harsh circumstances and societal pressures surrounding the protagonists. Balancing this layered emotional storytelling with engaging thriller elements proved to be a challenging process, requiring constant refinement.

Concluding the interview, Shaneil Deo expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the Telugu film industry, which he considers his second home. Despite being raised in the U.S., he feels a strong connection to Indian cinema and sees Dacoit as just the beginning of his journey as a filmmaker.
