The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), in alliance with Janasena and the BJP, has now been in power in Andhra Pradesh for nine months. While the administration has faced expected operational challenges, a new concern is emerging within the party’s core base—actions by younger TDP leaders that are not sitting well with the party’s loyal cadre.
Recent Incidents Causing Discontent
Lavu Krishna Devarayulu’s Meeting with PM Modi
Narsaraopeta MP Lavu Krishna Devarayulu recently facilitated a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and members of the Akkineni family, including actor Nagarjuna, in connection with the launch of a book on the legendary Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR). While this could be seen as a matter of personal or professional engagement, it sparked discontent among the TDP cadre.
Many loyalists feel that Nagarjuna’s long-standing association with the YS family—from his friendship with late YSR to his perceived proximity to Jagan Mohan Reddy—makes this meeting an unsettling move. Given that TDP fought a fierce battle against Jagan’s rule, supporters found it difficult to comprehend why a TDP MP would facilitate such an interaction.
Rammohan Naidu’s Special Darshan for Singer Mangli
TDP MP Rammohan Naidu faced backlash for arranging a special darshan for singer Mangli at the renowned Arasavalli Temple on Maha Shivaratri. The controversy stems from the perception that Mangli has openly sided with the YSRCP in the past, allegedly refusing to sing a campaign song for TDP while actively supporting Jagan’s political events.
For many TDP cadres, extending special privileges to an artist believed to be a vocal critic of their party was seen as a serious miscalculation by the young leader. The timing—on an auspicious day—only amplified the resentment.
Bojjala Sudheer Reddy’s Facilitation of the Manchu Family
Another recent instance involved Srikalahasti MLA Bojjala Sudheer Reddy, who personally ensured a hassle-free temple visit for the Manchu family at the Srikalahasti Temple. While this initially raised some eyebrows due to Mohan Babu’s past criticisms of Chandrababu Naidu, the backlash was relatively muted.
The reason? The Manchu family has recently softened its stance towards TDP, with some members publicly acknowledging Chandrababu Naidu’s leadership. This incident, therefore, did not escalate like the previous two.
Political Implications and the Way Forward
The common theme in these incidents is the disconnect between young TDP leaders and the party’s core base. While networking and maintaining good relations across various fields is an essential part of governance, these actions must be balanced against the sentiments of the party’s dedicated cadre, who have fought hard for TDP’s resurgence.
TDP’s younger generation of leaders must recognize that political optics matter, and every move will be scrutinized. The party’s grassroots supporters expect a firm stance against individuals perceived as adversaries—at least in the immediate aftermath of a hard-fought election. Balancing diplomacy with loyalty to party interests is a critical skill that these leaders must develop over time.
As TDP moves forward, ensuring that the cadre’s trust remains intact will be crucial. While these may appear to be isolated incidents, they underscore the importance of strategic decision-making in politics. Maintaining a unified party vision, particularly in times of transition, will be vital for the party’s long-term success.
