During today’s ongoing Andhra Pradesh Assembly session, the government officially clarified details about the upcoming free RTC travel program for women. The government confirmed that the initiative would be applicable only for intra-district travel, meaning women can travel free within a district but not between different districts.
Following this clarification, a fabricated campaign was launched to tarnish the reputation of Chandrababu Naidu and his government. Andhra Pradesh Congress president YS Sharmila joined the campaign, criticizing the government’s decision. She accused the TDP of reneging on its promise, stating that the free RTC bus rides for women program, which was initially promised without conditions, was now being restricted to the district level. Sharmila took to Twitter, calling this a “fraud” and claiming that the government was making excuses to avoid implementing the program in full. YCP also echoed these sentiments, accusing the TDP of backtracking after the election.
However, hours after Sharmila’s comment, the TDP quickly rebuked the allegations, presenting clear evidence in response. The party released a video from Chandrababu Naidu’s pre-election campaign in which he explicitly mentioned that the free travel program would only cover district-level travel and not inter-district travel. The TDP’s communication further emphasized that both Chandrababu Naidu and youth leader Nara Lokesh had made it clear during the election campaign that women would be able to travel free within a district, a promise they are now fulfilling.
The TDP countered the criticism by pointing out that while they are delivering on their promise, Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s impatience with the welfare program has led to unwarranted attacks on the initiative.
