In what could bring fresh trouble for Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh, TDP MLA from Guntur M. Venugopal Reddy raked up “Reddy” pride” and said that Reddys are being humiliated in the Yellow Party. “We need to bring back the rule of Reddys into Andhra Pradesh,” he added. The MLA also gave a call to the leaders of Reddy community to win over power from “Kammas.”
Telugu Desam Party which has loyalists and cadre from various castes, has of late, garnered an image of the party that supports “Kammas.” There has been a history of caste wars between Reddys and Kammas. According to sources, ever since the TDP government came to power in 2014, it is heard that caste fanaticism in the party has escalated.
However, TDP leaders have rubbished the Guntur MLA’s comments stating that he may be planning to defect to YSRCP. It is a well-known fact that YSRCP enjoys a huge support from the Reddy community. “It could be his ploy to make TDP look bad in people’s eyes and make it look like a caste-obsessed political party,” said a TDP leader who did not wish to be renamed. He added that “TDP has won over people from all castes and hence, our cadre is really strong. So, such comments about the party are false.”
With this new caste pride raked up, we are yet to see whether this will increase the caste differences in a state that will go for elections in the next 6 months or will this be a standing testimony to the existing differences between communities?
