In the wake of the crushing defeats inflicted by Team India in both the Test and the ongoing ODI series, the Sri Lankan Selection Committee has decided to collectively step down.
According to a notification from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Sports, the Selection Board headed by former dashing opener Sanath Jayasuriya, has officially resigned. The Committee however will continue in office until the end of the India tour, when the visitors play their last match, a solitary T20I on September 6.
Summarizing Sri Lanka’s disastrous performance over the past few months, they had lost to Zimbabwe and Bangladesh at home, were knocked out of the Champions Trophy, and the tour of India where the visitors clean swept the Test series 3-0 and already won the 5-match ODI series 3-0 with two matches still to play. The India series exposed the Lankan team’s weakness like never before.
Sri Lanka, which used to be a formidable force in world cricket, has started facing an insidious crisis ever since the retirement of key players. The mismanagement of Team is also being cited as another key reason for the lackluster performance. Amidst mounting pressure due to the humiliating defeats, the selection committee decided to resign collectively.
