Bollywood has been facing a tough time in recent years, with South Indian films dominating the pan-India box office. While a few Hindi films like Pathaan, Jawan, Gadar 2, Animal, and Stree 2 have managed to make an impact, the industry at large has struggled to captivate audiences. Generic storytelling, lack of fresh ideas, and scripts disconnected from Indian roots have been some of the key reasons behind Bollywood’s slump.

The disappointing trend continued into 2025. On January 10, Sonu Sood’s action thriller Fateh failed to make any impact at the box office, marking a disappointing start for the year. Following that, on January 17, Ajay Devgn’s Azaad and Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency also failed to strike a chord with moviegoers, despite starring big names.

Looking ahead, the Republic Day weekend brings a glimmer of hope with the release of Akshay Kumar’s Sky Force. However, Akshay, too, has been experiencing a rough patch in recent years, with films opening to disappointing numbers and struggling at the box office. The trailer for Sky Force received a lukewarm response, and many are skeptical, viewing it as just another generic patriotic military film.

With little anticipation surrounding Sky Force, it remains to be seen if Akshay Kumar can defy expectations and deliver Bollywood’s first hit of 2025. If not, the month of January may end up as another setback for the Hindi film industry.
