Tejasvi Surya Remarks on AP–Telangana Bifurcation Spark Row

It has been nearly a decade and a half since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, yet the issue continues to remain sensitive and widely debated. The topic has once again gained attention following recent comments made by Karnataka MP Tejasvi Surya in Parliament.

During a discussion on the proposed delimitation bill being extensively debated within the NDA alliance, the situation took a controversial turn after Surya reportedly compared the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to the partition of India and Pakistan. His remarks were widely perceived as provocative and quickly sparked backlash across social media platforms.

In his statement, the MP allegedly criticized the then UPA government, calling the state division decision flawed and likening it to the historical partition carried out during British rule. This comparison triggered strong reactions online, with many users condemning the comment and accusing him of disrespecting the sentiments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Following the controversy, social media saw a wave of responses. One user questioned the silence of Telangana MPs, saying they were elected to protect the state’s pride and should respond when its history and movement are criticized. Another user pointed out that political parties across the spectrum had supported the decision at the time. A different comment from a Kannada user criticized the MP’s performance, alleging neglect of constituency issues such as metro and suburban rail development, while focusing instead on unrelated political remarks.

The incident has once again reignited discussions around the bifurcation and its political sensitivity, drawing sharp reactions from both supporters and critics online.
