Jyotika Faces Backlash Over South Cinema Comment

Actress Jyotika, widely recognized for her work in Tamil and Hindi cinema, has found herself in the middle of controversy after an old video from a past event resurfaced online.

In the clip, recorded during the promotions of Shaitaan last year, Jyotika remarked:
“I have acted with almost all leading actors in South India. But women don’t get much importance there, not even on posters. People like Mammootty and Ajay Devgn give women prominence.”

Her statement has triggered mixed reactions on social media. Many netizens accused her of unfairly generalizing the South Indian film industry, pointing out that her own career stands as proof otherwise. Several users shared old posters from her hit films like Chandramukhi, highlighting that Jyotika was prominently featured and celebrated in Tamil cinema.

One user commented on X (formerly Twitter):
“Acted in Kollywood, earned fame and money, married Suriya, and still enjoys massive fan following here. Nothing wrong in praising Ajay Devgn or Mammootty, but don’t demean the industry that made you who you are.”

Another added:
“Appreciating colleagues is fine, but not at the cost of belittling the cinema that gave you recognition.”

Despite the debate, Jyotika continues to stay active in films. She was recently seen in Netflix’s Dabba Cartel alongside Shabana Azmi, Nimisha Sajayan, Shalini Pandey, and Anjali Anand. Earlier this year, she appeared in Rajkummar Rao’s Srikanth and the Ajay Devgn–R. Madhavan thriller Shaitaan.
