“Telangana Phone Tapping Scandal: KCR’s Surveillance State Exposed”

Share

The unfolding investigation into alleged illegal phone tapping under the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) regime has sent shockwaves through Telangana’s political and civil society landscape. The extent of the surveillance, reportedly carried out between 2022 and 2023, appears to be far more expansive than initially believed.

Sources indicate that the former government, led by then Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), may have authorized the surveillance of over 4,500 individuals. While intelligence monitoring of political adversaries, extremists, or suspected anti-social elements is not unheard of, this operation reportedly extended far beyond conventional boundaries — raising grave concerns about constitutional rights and civil liberties.

According to emerging reports, those targeted included journalists, sitting judges, IAS and IPS officers, advocates, business leaders, and even members of KCR’s own family. Notably, his daughter K. Kavitha, her husband, nephew and senior BRS leader T. Harish Rao, and other close relatives were allegedly under watch.

Observers suggest that such all-encompassing snooping may be rooted in the deep insecurities of the former chief minister. “He was so insecure that he couldn’t even trust his own shadow,” remarked one political analyst. The security-heavy environment at Pragathi Bhavan — which featured fortified walls and even bulletproof bathrooms — only added to the impression of a leadership consumed by mistrust.

The investigation is now reportedly probing whether surveillance was also used for internal party espionage, celebrity blackmail, and suppression of dissent. “He was a chief minister wrapped in hyper-security and mistrust,” commented another analyst, highlighting the atmosphere of fear and control that allegedly characterized the final years of KCR’s tenure.

Some critics have gone so far as to describe his leadership as a “daily digital yagna” — a ritual of relentless surveillance fueled by paranoia and an obsession with retaining power.

As the investigation deepens, the controversy continues to provoke questions about political overreach, abuse of power, and the fragile line between state security and individual freedom in a democratic society.
