Telugu Film Chamber to Launch Prestigious Industry Awards

The Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce has announced its decision to launch its own film awards, marking a historic moment in Tollywood. “For the first time, a trade body will be organizing film awards in the Telugu film industry,” stated Prasanna Kumar, Treasurer of the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce. He noted that similar trade organizations in Kerala and Karnataka have been hosting their own awards for years. “February 6 is a significant day for Telugu cinema, as it marks the release of the first Telugu talkie film, Bhakta Prahlada, directed by the legendary H.M. Reddy. Before this, Kalidasu (1931) included four reels of Telugu songs and dialogues. Today, Telugu cinema has gained global recognition,” he added.

The Chamber’s inaugural awards ceremony is scheduled for February 6, 2026. The selection process will involve inviting applications from producers for films released between January 1 and December 31 each year. The awards will recognize the best actor, actress, director, and nearly 30 other categories. To ensure a fair and transparent process, the Chamber intends to follow selection criteria used by the National Film Awards and Indian Panorama at film festivals.

Amidst the Telangana government’s Gadar Film Awards and Andhra Pradesh’s initiative to revive the Nandi Awards, some may view the Chamber’s awards as competition. However, Kumar clarified, “Our intention is not to compete with state or national awards but to create a neutral platform that honors Telugu talent without regional bias. We also plan to felicitate winners of state and national awards.” As the apex body representing thousands of producers, distributors, studios, and exhibitors, the Chamber aims to establish a prestigious and independent awards ceremony that truly celebrates Telugu cinema.
