Films that apply for the Oscars are generally expected to carry a strong artistic appeal or thematic depth. Several Telugu films were submitted this year, but none made it to the final list.
Among them was Pushpa 2, the saga of a smuggler with Narcos-like shades. Kannappa, based on the legendary devotee from Indian mythology, was also in the race. Then came Gandhi Thatha Chettu, an art-style film that explores the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi, and Kuberaa, which tells the story of a beggar. Each of these, in some way, carried artistic or thematic elements that could justify their Oscar applications.
But what left many surprised was the inclusion of Sankranthiki Vastunnam. Beyond being a commercial box-office hit, critics wondered what merit this film had to even dream of standing in line for the Oscars. Its submission has become the biggest talking point.
Meanwhile, the Hindi film Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, has been officially chosen as India’s entry for the upcoming Oscars.
For Telugu cinema, while five films were considered, none could make the cut — and the real shocker remains how Sankranthiki Vastunnam found its way into the submissions in the first place.
