A court in Hyderabad on Wednesday sentenced a temple priest to life imprisonment for the murder of a 30-year-old woman with whom he was having an extramarital affair.
The convict, Ayyagari Venkata Surya Sai Krishna, a priest at a temple in Saroornagar, was found guilty of killing the woman in 2023 after she began pressuring him to marry her. In an attempt to cover up the crime, he disposed of her body in a manhole near the Maisamma temple, where he was employed.
The Rangareddy district court convicted Venkata Sai of murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Additionally, he received a seven-year sentence for destroying evidence and was fined Rs. 10,000.
Shamshabad police played a key role in the investigation, presenting crucial evidence that led to Sai Krishna’s conviction.
The case came to light on June 9, 2023, when the woman, identified as Apsara, a resident of Saroornagar, was reported missing. Despite being married and a father of two, Sai Krishna had been in a relationship with her. As she pressured him for marriage, he devised a plan to eliminate her.
According to police, Sai Krishna lured Apsara to Sultanpalli in Shamshabad mandal on the outskirts of the city on June 3, under the pretext of resolving their differences. During a heated argument over her marriage demands, he allegedly killed her by smashing her head with a boulder. He then placed her body in a bag and returned to Saroornagar, where he dumped it in a manhole.
To mislead investigators, he later filed a complaint with Shamshabad police claiming that his relative Apsara had gone missing after he dropped her at the airport. He also told them she had stopped responding to calls from June 4 and her phone appeared to be switched off.
The investigation gained momentum after police reviewed CCTV footage and analyzed Sai Krishna’s mobile signals. The evidence pointed directly to him, and during questioning, he confessed to the murder.
