When a film stars the likes of Madhavan, Nayanthara, and Siddharth, expectations naturally skyrocket. Add the convenience of an OTT release on Netflix, and movie buffs are instantly intrigued. Test, directed by S. Shashikanth, arrived with this promise—a sports drama wrapped in emotion and backed by a powerhouse cast. However, despite the hype, the film ends up being more of a test of patience than an engaging watch.
Originally planned for a theatrical release, Test eventually made its debut on Netflix after facing delays and changes in release strategy. The story centers around Kumud (Nayanthara), a school teacher, and her husband Saravanan (Madhavan), a scientist. The couple, struggling with infertility, turn to surrogacy in hopes of starting a family. Parallelly, we follow Arjun (Siddharth), a talented cricketer battling poor form and struggling to retain his spot in the Indian team.
The paths of these seemingly unconnected individuals cross under strange and dramatic circumstances. Things spiral when Arjun’s son is kidnapped by Saravanan, and the incident appears to be linked to a crucial India vs Pakistan Test match. While the premise offers an interesting blend of sports, emotion, and suspense, the execution falls short.
The major letdown lies in the storytelling. What could have been a gripping, emotional narrative ends up feeling scattered and underwhelming. The characters lack depth, and the pacing drags, making the film feel heavier than it should be. Despite sincere efforts from the lead actors—Madhavan, Nayanthara, and Siddharth—the script doesn’t give them enough substance to shine.
In the end, Test fails to live up to its potential. Instead of delivering an edge-of-the-seat drama, it becomes a sluggish affair that tests the audience’s patience more than it entertains. With a tighter script and better character development, this could have been a winner. But as it stands, it’s the viewers who end up on the losing side.
