Thailand Keeps Visa-Free Entry for Indians

Indian travellers can continue to visit Thailand without a visa, providing much-needed clarity after months of uncertainty surrounding the country’s entry policy. However, while visa-free access remains in place for Indian passport holders, the maximum permitted stay has now been reduced from 60 days to 30 days.

The revised policy follows reports that discussions about ending visa-free entry for Indian travellers had created confusion and contributed to a decline in tourist arrivals from India. Although the proposal was never implemented, it reportedly affected travel sentiment. India continues to be one of Thailand’s largest international tourism markets, alongside countries such as China and Malaysia.

Thailand’s Tourism Minister, Surasak Phancharoenworakul, said the updated policy better reflects the travel patterns of Indian visitors while continuing to support the country’s tourism industry. He also noted that the government could review the policy again in the future if necessary.

Earlier this year, Thailand’s Cabinet approved a proposal to reduce the number of visa-exempt countries and introduce a 30-day stay limit for eligible visitors. Under the latest decision, Indian passport holders will continue to enjoy visa-free entry, but their stay will now be capped at 30 days instead of the previous 60-day limit.

The revised rules are part of Thailand’s broader efforts to prevent misuse of its visa-free programme. Authorities have expressed concerns about some foreign nationals using visa exemptions to work illegally or engage in activities that violate immigration regulations. The changes are intended to strengthen immigration oversight while maintaining Thailand’s appeal as a global tourist destination.

Tourism remains one of the strongest pillars of Thailand’s economy, and retaining visa-free access for Indian travellers is expected to help sustain visitor numbers while ensuring better regulation of the country’s immigration system.
