‘Retro’ Holds the Key to Suriya’s Telugu Comeback
Suriya has long been a beloved name among Telugu audiences, thanks to films like Ghajini, Aaru, Surya S/o Krishnan, Singam, and 24. His blend of intense performances and relatable characters helped him garner a loyal fanbase across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. However, unlike Tamil superstars Rajinikanth or Vijay, Suriya is yet to deliver a pan-Indian blockbuster that firmly establishes him as a consistent crowd-puller in the Telugu states.
With his latest film Retro gearing up for release on May 1, Suriya is attempting to reclaim his footing in the Telugu market. The task, however, is anything but easy.
Following the massive failure of Kanguva, which had its Telugu rights sold for over ₹22 crore, Retro has seen a significant dip in business, with Telugu rights fetching just ₹10 crore. This steep decline is indicative of how much Suriya’s market has shrunk in recent years.
Adding to the pressure, director Karthik Subbaraj has yet to make a notable impact in the Telugu industry, and lead actress Pooja Hegde has been relatively absent from the Tollywood spotlight lately. The Retro trailer also hasn’t generated the expected buzz, and to make matters more competitive, the film is set to clash with Nani’s much-awaited HIT 3.
With all these hurdles, Retro is a crucial release for Suriya. A strong performance could pave the way for his upcoming Telugu-Tamil bilingual project with director Venky Atluri. More importantly, it could restore his lost market value in AP and Telangana. For now, all eyes are on whether Retro can be the comeback hit Suriya needs.
