Today is the last day for filing the nomination papers by the contestants of the local body elections and enough violence has happened already. There is a problem with the local body elections when compared to the general elections.
The Police Officers who are instructed by the Election Commission to restrict the violence and the unlawful acts generally back off as they are feared by the local powers. They have this local feeling and their hands are tied for various reasons.
In almost all general body elections, the wave tilts in the favour of ruling party’s and there will be huge pressure on the Police to detain the supporters belong to them. It is being said that the same happened yesterday in many areas and the Police haven’t put their complete efforts to take the situation under their control.
In many states, the police are given some powers keeping the situation in mind. Past is past and now as the government itself already stated that the distribution of money and liquor is prohibited, the Police should catch them red-handedly and they can argue with the facts in the campaigning period.
There is a power for the Police to charge certain people under ‘bind over’ and those people will be automatically placed in Police Station at period every election that is going to happen in the future which will spoil their aspiring political career once they enter the record. So the Police need to be strategic as well as fearless to protect the public from the over enthusiastic trouble makers.
