Thug Life Fails at Box Office, Faces OTT Release Controversy

Director Mani Ratnam’s much-hyped film Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, and Trisha, has unfortunately turned out to be a major box office disappointment. Despite the strong star cast and pre-release buzz, the film failed to resonate with audiences and is now labeled as a commercial disaster.

During the promotional phase, Kamal Haasan had announced that Thug Life would follow the standard protocol of releasing on OTT platforms only eight weeks after its theatrical debut. However, in light of its poor theatrical performance, reports suggest that the makers opted for an early digital release, with Netflix having secured the film’s streaming rights.

This move has sparked controversy, especially in North India, where a mandatory eight-week window between theatrical and OTT releases is strictly observed. Films that violate this rule are usually barred from screening in national multiplex chains such as PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis.

In response to the breach, multiplex chains have reportedly imposed a penalty of ₹25 lakh on the film’s producers for violating the release window agreement. The incident has stirred discussions in the industry about the challenges films face when they underperform at the box office.

Recently, Mani Ratnam issued a public apology, acknowledging the film’s failure to meet audience expectations and expressing regret over the outcome.

As Thug Life heads to OTT sooner than anticipated, all eyes are now on its digital performance, which may offer a chance at redemption.
