Titan pays tribute to Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma with Unity Watch on its 40th anniversary Technology

Marking four decades of craftsmanship, Titan Watches commemorated its 40th anniversary with a tribute to a defining moment in Indian history—the 1984 space mission of Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to journey into space. Aboard the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz T-11, Wing Commander Sharma famously captured the hearts of millions with his iconic response, “Saare Jahaan Se Achha,” when asked how India looked from space. This statement, reflecting pride and unity, became a timeless symbol of national aspiration.

In a fitting celebration of both legacies, Titan unveiled the ‘Unity Watch’, a celestial-inspired limited-edition timepiece. Drawing from Mr. Sharma’s awe-inspiring view of Earth, the watch embodies the vision of unity, shared dreams, and limitless possibilities. With its design rooted in the profound perspective of Earth from space, the Unity Watch is a testament to the interconnectedness of humanity and a tribute to Titan’s enduring pursuit of innovation and excellence.

At an intimate gathering held at Lupa in Bengaluru, Titan presented the first Unity Watch—part of a collection limited to 300 pieces—to Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma himself. The heartwarming ceremony was enriched by Mr. Sharma’s recollections of his historic space journey, including the humbling and transcendent view of Earth that inspired the timepiece. His stories underscored the universal message of unity and the significance of humanity’s shared home.

The event also featured insights from Titan’s design team, who shared the intricate process behind creating the Unity Watch. The discussions highlighted the parallels between the precision and engineering required in both space exploration and watchmaking. Both endeavors reflect a shared ethos of “Make in India,” showcasing India’s advancements in technology and artistry.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Rahul Shukla, Vice President & CSMO of Titan Watches, expressed the brand’s pride in celebrating India’s heritage and future:

“For four decades, Titan has woven the soul of India into every timepiece we create. This year, we proudly mark the 40th anniversary of Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma’s legendary space journey—a moment that united India in its limitless aspirations. The Unity Watch, crafted by our in-house team, embodies the innovation and artistry of ‘Make in India.’ It celebrates space, science, and our leap forward in creating watches that honor India’s remarkable legacy. With this launch, we reaffirm our commitment to crafting timepieces that embody and celebrate the indomitable spirit propelling India forward.”

The Unity Watch stands as a symbol of India’s remarkable achievements, blending Titan’s legacy of precision and design with the nation’s pioneering advancements in space exploration. This commemorative timepiece is not just a celebration of history but also an inspiration for the future.
