By having the advantage of widest releases and diverse audiences, Bollywood has been dominating the Southern film industries at box office for years. Thanks to Baahubali, Tollywood, for that matter any Southern industry, has for the first time beat Bollywood by a huge margin.
In the first half of 2017, while all the released Bollywood films together collected around 1500 crore, Tollywood box office produced 2070 crore approx revenue. While Tollywood has seen money spinners like Baahubali 2 (major contributor), Khaidi No.150 and some others, Bollywood couldn’t produce even a single film that could really set box office on fire. Salman’s Tubelight, SRK’s Raees and Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil failed miserably at box office.
These figures are giving nightmares to Bollywood filmmakers. Trade analysts are ringing warning bells saying Tollywood has evolved to the extent of having the potential to end the monopoly of Bollywood.
With promising films such as PK-Trivikram, Mahesh Babu’s Spyder, NTR’s Jai Lava Kusa and a slew of other releases in pipeline, the second half of 2017 is also expected to give tough competition to Bollywood.
In comparison, the business done by Tamil cinema was around 450 Cr and all the other remaining film industries together was 1200 crores approx. in the 1st half of 2017.
