People may talk a lot about new-age cinema and different concepts which are getting a lot of encouragement these days but it is the mass commercial movies that are still the biggest money spinners in Tollywood. The collections a decent commercial movie brings is 3-4 times more than what a perfect concept-oriented movie gets. This is why a lot of industry people are still willing to spend huge money on mass movies.
Chiranjeevi made a historic film like ‘Sye Ra’, a social drama like ‘Acharya’ and a political thriller like ‘Godfather’ but it is mass masala entertainers like ‘Khaidi No 150’ and ‘Waltair Veerayya’ that turned out to be his biggest hits till date in the second innings. ‘One Nenokkadine’ might be termed a classic but movies like ‘Sarkaru Vaari Paata’ and ‘Sarileru Neekevvaru’ got more money despite all these flaws. This is the main reason why a lot of young heroes who impressed the audience with their different story selections often try their luck with mass commercial movies too.
They want the mass image in order to reach the next level. Natural Star Nani scored many hits but he is yet to be a mass hero image. His mass action flicks like ‘Krishna Arjuna Yuddham’, ‘Paisa’, ‘Jenda Pai Kapiraju’ and others turned out to be flops. But Nani is once again coming up with ‘Dasara’ which is a complete rural mass drama. If this movie succeeds, Nani is surely going to reach the next level.
Vishwak Sen is trying for a mass image since the beginning. Despite doing movies like ‘Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi’, ‘Ashoka Vanamlo Arjuna Kalyanam’ and ‘Ori Devuda’, he played a mass character in his directorial ‘Falaknuma Das’. For his second directorial, he is arriving with ‘Das Ka Dhamki’ which looks like a complete action entertainer. Prasanna Kumar Bezawada has penned the story and there is a decent buzz on this film. Even Kiran Abbavaram is trying to be a commercial hero. Despite being a small hero, he always came up with commercial entertainers which did not work at the box office. He became a ‘Gabbar Singh’ kind of police officer for his next movie ‘Meter’. The teaser came out recently and it promises a complete commercial package.
Even Nithiin is trying to do the same as his next flick with Vakkantham Vamsi is going to be a mass flick and we all know that Ram is aiming for a mass image for a long time. He got a complete makeover from his chocolate boy image through ‘Ismart Shankar’ and he is working with Boyapati Sreenu now.
