What began as a jubilant celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) historic first Indian Premier League (IPL) title took a tragic turn on Wednesday evening, as a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed at least 11 lives and left more than 50 injured or ill.
Thousands of fans gathered near the stadium to take part in the celebrations for RCB’s maiden IPL victory. However, crowd control measures failed disastrously when attendees tried to surge through multiple entry points, leading to chaos and a deadly stampede.
Emergency services were immediately deployed, with police and volunteers struggling to clear paths for ambulances amid severe overcrowding. Authorities reported that six individuals are currently in critical condition and undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Vaidehi Hospital, while others are being treated at Bowring Hospital. The bodies of several victims were confirmed to be at these two facilities.
The Karnataka government had earlier cancelled the official victory parade scheduled to proceed from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Stadium, citing security concerns. Despite this, thousands of fans still gathered near the venue, resulting in uncontrollable crowd density.
Social media erupted in outrage over the continuation of celebration broadcasts even as the tragedy unfolded. Users condemned the lack of coordination and preparedness, accusing authorities and event organizers of negligence.
“Unbelievable! Victory celebration broadcast of RCB parade continues. No mention of stampede. NOT DONE,” read a post on X.
“This isn’t a celebration gone wrong; this is an administration failure. No barricades, no crowd strategy—people died for nothing,” another user wrote.
Calls for accountability have grown louder, with demands for immediate investigation and action against those responsible for the tragic mismanagement.
As the city mourns an avoidable tragedy, questions loom large over the planning and execution of large-scale public events, especially in emotionally charged environments such as sporting victories. The Karnataka government is expected to issue an official statement and initiate a probe into the incident.
