A tragic stampede occurred at New Delhi Railway Station on the night of Saturday, February 15, as over 18 people, including nine women, four men, and five children, lost their lives. Many others were injured in the chaos when devotees, heading to the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, gathered in large numbers at the station.
The incident took place around 10 p.m. at platform numbers 14 and 15, as passengers attempted to force their way onto the coaches of the Magadh Express. The heavy crowd, compounded by weekend rush, quickly spiraled out of control. Despite efforts by the Railways to manage the situation, including deploying extra trains, the large influx of passengers and onlookers made the crowd unmanageable. There was a lack of adequate police presence, which further exacerbated the situation.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that passengers were struggling to board already overcrowded trains, with many trying to get on the Magadh Express at platform 15, leading to the stampede. The situation was described as chaotic, with platforms 12, 13, 14, and 15 packed to the brim, leaving no space for movement. In the midst of the turmoil, railway personnel and coolies assisted passengers, but unfortunately, several people fell victim to the stampede.
By the morning of February 16, the situation had been brought under control, and the station returned to normal operations. In response to the tragedy, compensation has been announced for the affected individuals. The families of the deceased will receive ₹10 lakh, those seriously injured will be compensated with ₹2.5 lakh, and ₹1 lakh will be provided to those with minor injuries.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and ensure better safety measures for the future.
