Amid ongoing federal budget cuts, aggressive immigration enforcement, and falling approval ratings, the Trump administration has intensified its stance—this time targeting even legal immigrants in the United States.
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) issued a strong warning on Tuesday, cautioning green card holders and visa recipients to strictly follow American laws and values or risk losing their legal status. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the agency stated, “Green cards and visas will be revoked if an alien breaks the law.”
The message emphasized that immigration is a privilege, not a right: “Coming to America and receiving a visa or green card is a privilege. Our laws and values must be respected. If you advocate for violence, support terrorism, or encourage others to do so, you are no longer eligible to stay in the U.S.”
This directive comes as part of a broader crackdown that extends beyond undocumented immigrants to now include foreign nationals residing in the U.S. legally.
Legal Visa Holders Could Face Immediate Deportation
According to an internal memo from the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)—a division under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)—even legal status could be instantly terminated if a visa is revoked.
Previously, international students and other non-citizens had an opportunity to appeal or rectify minor issues. However, the updated policy enables ICE to initiate deportation proceedings solely based on visa revocation, eliminating previous safeguards and due process.
NBC News reports that the SEVP memo also broadens the criteria for removing foreign students from the U.S., including reasons like dropping out of school, losing work authorization, or committing certain violations.
