President Donald Trump announced on Monday that a ceasefire has been reached between Israel and Iran following nearly two weeks of direct conflict. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated the ceasefire would take effect just after midnight Eastern Time, with the war officially ending 12 hours later.
Neither Israel nor Iran immediately confirmed the ceasefire. The conflict escalated earlier this month after Israel attacked Iranian nuclear facilities, leading both countries to exchange drone and missile strikes. Most recently, Israel conducted airstrikes on northern Iran and areas around Tehran. Just an hour before the ceasefire announcement, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei emphasized Iran’s resilience, stating that “the Iranian nation isn’t a nation that surrenders.”
The United States initially stayed out of the conflict but entered on Saturday, bombing key Iranian nuclear sites, including Fordo and Natanz. Iran then notified the U.S. of a retaliatory strike on a major American airbase in Qatar, which occurred on Monday.
Trump’s announcement reflects a shift from earlier positions. After months of suggesting a nuclear deal with Iran was near, Trump fully backed Israel’s June 13 attack that triggered the conflict. Less than two weeks later, he authorized U.S. strikes on Iranian facilities but quickly pivoted to diplomacy after Iran’s limited response.
Vice President JD Vance echoed Trump’s tone, calling the ceasefire an “important reset moment for the entire region” and adopting the term “12 Day War” to describe the conflict.
