A planned meeting in Hungary between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has been postponed, with no new date announced, according to US and Russian officials. The delay follows a “constructive but inconclusive” phone call between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Trump, who had recently spoken with Putin about advancing efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, stated he did not want to hold a “wasted meeting.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that serious preparations are needed before any summit can take place, though Russia’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev emphasized that preparations for a future meeting are ongoing and the summit has not been canceled.
The postponement came after Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House and ruled out a trilateral meeting, citing ongoing tensions between Moscow and Kyiv. Previous attempts, including a Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska in August, failed to produce a ceasefire agreement.
Trump described his recent phone conversation with Putin as making “great progress” and indicated he would discuss it with Zelensky.
