Donald Trump has stated that the ongoing tensions with Iran are “very close to over,” expressing optimism about a possible resolution while also issuing strong warnings. In an interview, Trump said that if the United States chose to escalate further, it could devastate Iran to the extent that it would take decades to rebuild. At the same time, he indicated that Iran is eager to strike a deal.
Trump emphasized that the situation is nearing a turning point, adding that Iran is keen on negotiations. He also remarked that if Iran possessed nuclear weapons, it would significantly alter global dynamics, underscoring the urgency of preventing such a scenario.
These comments come amid reports of fresh rounds of talks between the United States and Iran, including discussions held in Islamabad. While initial negotiations did not produce a breakthrough, backchannel talks are said to be making gradual progress, with both sides attempting to narrow their differences.
JD Vance also weighed in, stating that the Trump administration is aiming for a “grand bargain” with Iran. However, he acknowledged that deep-rooted mistrust between the two nations remains a major obstacle, making a quick resolution unlikely.
A key sticking point in the negotiations continues to be Iran’s nuclear program. The United States has reportedly proposed a 20-year suspension of Iran’s nuclear activities, while Iran has suggested a shorter pause of three to five years. Additionally, the U.S. has demanded the removal of enriched nuclear material from Iran as part of any agreement.
The complexity of the issue is further heightened by the legacy of the Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA), which the U.S. exited in 2018. Any new agreement would require strict monitoring by international bodies and careful negotiation of terms. Iran has also insisted on the lifting of international sanctions, a demand that the U.S. alone cannot fully guarantee.
Overall, while there are signs of progress, the path to a final agreement remains uncertain, with both sides needing to overcome significant political and strategic challenges.
