The political crisis in the richest state of India Maharashtra has reached the pre-climax as the Maha Vikas Aghadi government was asked to face the floor test. Adding another big twist, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray resigned from his post on Wednesday night. The Maharashtra Cabinet under Uddhav Thackeray met for its last meeting the other day.
Besides resigning from the post, Uddhav Thackeray also proposed renaming two big cities Aurangabad and Osmanabad as Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv respectively. The demand for renaming the two cities goes back a few decades and Uddhav was fulfilled at last.
Earlier it was reported that Shiv Sena would rename the cities before the next elections to boost its pro-Hindutva ideology to get votes. As the political scenario changed at once in the state, Uddhav Thackeray used the Shiv Sena’s trump card in his last Cabinet meeting as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
As he stepped down as the Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray is likely to go to the public to seek a fresh mandate and Shiv Sena is expected to use the trump card in seeking the mandate.
The chances of Shiv Sena coming to power are very thin as the majority of the MLAs took the side of rebel leader Eknath Shinde. As BJP has good strength, the support of the rebel MLAs will come in handy to form the government.
A few incidents have raised the question of whether Shiv Sena had moved from its Hindutva ideology. To prove that Shiv Sena is still stuck to its Hindutva ideology, Uddhav Thackeray renamed the two big cities as per the long-pending demand.
Experts say that Uddhav Thackeray might meet the people in the state to seek their mandate and make them understand the role played by the Bharatiya Janata Party in bringing down the government ending its stint as the ruling party of 31 months.
Back in the 1980s, Telugu Desam Party founder chief late NTR did the same and sought a fresh mandate from the public after the Congress party captured the power from him. He was successful in doing so with the people voting the party to power. We have to wait and see if Uddhav can be successful like NTR on not.
