In a landmark development strengthening educational collaboration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer have announced that nine leading British universities — including the University of Southampton — will establish campuses in India.

The University of Southampton’s Gurugram campus is already operational, welcoming its first cohort of students this year. This initiative aligns with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, enabling students to access world-class education domestically while promoting research-driven growth and academia-industry partnerships.

Expansion Across Key Indian Cities

Five renowned UK universities are set to open campuses across major Indian cities. The University of Bristol has secured approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish an Enterprise Campus in Mumbai, expected to admit its inaugural batch in summer 2026.

A New Era in India–UK Educational Collaboration

Prime Minister Starmer’s visit to India (October 8–9) coincides with the launch of this initiative under the India–UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the Vision 2035 roadmap — a decade-long plan to strengthen cooperation in education, trade, technology, innovation, and defence.

This initiative marks a transformative step in bilateral relations, positioning education as a cornerstone of India–UK ties. By allowing top UK institutions to operate within India, both nations aim to deliver global-standard learning opportunities, enhance research collaboration, and foster innovation ecosystems that benefit students and industries alike.
