Ukraine has proposed resuming peace talks with Russia next week, aiming to revive stalled negotiations, according to Al Jazeera. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that National Security and Defence Council Secretary Rustem Umerov extended the invitation for fresh discussions with Russian representatives.
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for renewed efforts to achieve a ceasefire, urging Russia to engage sincerely in dialogue. “The Russian side should stop hiding from decisions,” he stated in his evening address. He also reiterated his willingness for a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying, “A leadership-level meeting is necessary to secure lasting peace.”
So far, Russia has not officially responded to Ukraine’s latest proposal. Umerov, who recently took charge of Ukraine’s Security and Defence Council, had previously led two negotiation rounds in Turkey, which resulted only in limited agreements on prisoner exchanges.
In past talks, Russia’s demands — including Ukraine ceding four regions and ending Western military cooperation — were rejected by Kyiv. However, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov recently acknowledged that peace efforts need “more momentum,” echoing Zelenskyy’s sentiment.
Adding pressure to the situation, U.S. President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Moscow, giving a 50-day deadline to agree to a ceasefire or face steep tariffs and secondary sanctions on nations purchasing Russian oil. Trump also vowed to increase military aid to Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticized the U.S. stance, calling it “blackmail” and warning that renewed arms supplies to Ukraine could derail the peace process entirely.
