Keeping up the fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) over the Lakhimpur Kheri violence incident, the Congress leaders led by Raul Gandhi met the Honorable President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday. The leaders are said to have placed a few requests before the President.
As per the information, the leaders have requested the President to see that Union Minister Ajay Mishra should tender his resignation over the incident and a special inquiry should be called for to get more details and facts in connection with the case.
For transparency in the probe, the Congress delegation had sought an independent judicial probe and a Supreme Court sitting Judge should oversee the probe. The Congress leaders gave a requisition to the President on their two demands pertaining to the Uttar Pradesh violence incident.
It is learnt that during the meeting with Ram Nath Kovind, former Congress supremo Rahul Gandhi had mentioned that earlier too the Union Minister had threatened the farmers and justice cannot be served to the victims when he is in power and sought his resignation.
In the memorandum that was submitted to the President, the Congress leaders said that the attack that was reported in daylight had scarred the soul of the country and called the attack on the farmers a heinous one.
The Congress leaders also rubbished the reports that say Ajay Mishra’s son was not present in the car. They said that a few eyewitnesses have spotted the BJP Union Minister’s son in the vehicle on the day of the incident.
The Congress leaders that met the President include Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge, A K Antony, and Ghulam Nabi Azad. After the meeting, the delegation spoke to the media to give details on the demands placed before the President during the meeting.
Gandhi scion Priyanka Gandhi Vadra told the media that they had requested two things from the President that the Union Minister should be removed from his post and the judicial probe by the Sitting Judge of Supreme Court should be started.
When asked about the response from the President, Priyanka Gandhi said, the delegation was assured by the President that the issue will be discussed with the Union Government on Wednesday.
