US Launches ‘Project Freedom’ Naval Mission in Strait of Hormuz

Donald Trump has announced a major naval initiative titled “Project Freedom”, under which the US Navy will begin escorting foreign vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday.

According to Trump, the operation is aimed at safely guiding trapped merchant ships out of the restricted and conflict-hit waterway so they can resume normal trade activities. He warned that any interference from Iran would be met with a strong response.

The former president described the mission as a humanitarian effort intended to assist ships that have been stuck for weeks, with many reportedly running low on essential supplies such as food and drinking water for their crews. Following the announcement, the UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that a tanker was struck by unidentified projectiles in the region, further escalating tensions.

The United States Central Command confirmed that the operation, directed by the US President, will involve guided-missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft, unmanned platforms, and nearly 15,000 personnel. The mission aims to restore safe and free navigation through the strategically vital waterway.

Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, stated that the initiative is crucial for both regional security and global economic stability, as the Strait of Hormuz handles a significant share of the world’s oil and energy shipments.

The strait, located between Oman and Iran, is one of the most important maritime trade routes in the world. Reports indicate that since the escalation of conflict, large-scale shipping movement through the region has been heavily disrupted, with several vessels facing attacks or seizures.

While the US claims the operation is humanitarian in nature, diplomatic discussions with Iran are reportedly ongoing. However, details about which countries will be directly assisted under the mission and how coordination will work remain unclear at this stage.
