US Reaffirms ‘Ironclad’ Alliance with South Korea Amid Political Turmoil

The situation in South Korea has created significant political turbulence, particularly after President Yoon Suk Yeol’s martial law attempt and subsequent impeachment. The U.S. government, however, has made it clear that this domestic unrest will not affect the strength of its alliance with South Korea. John Kirby, National Security Communications Advisor, emphasized the importance of South Korea working toward stability and the commitment of the U.S. to maintaining a strong defense posture to deter any external threats, including from North Korea.

The U.S. also reassured its continued military cooperation with South Korea, with Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh affirming that the 28,500-strong U.S. Forces Korea will remain unchanged despite the political turmoil in Seoul. The term “ironclad” was notably used to describe the U.S.-ROK military commitment, signaling that Washington will continue its robust support for South Korea’s defense.

Additionally, the White House has underscored its confidence in the South Korean government’s ability to navigate through this period, with particular attention on the constitutional processes and the efforts by acting President Choi to maintain national stability.

This moment of internal strife in South Korea has yet to alter the strong international military and diplomatic bond between the U.S. and South Korea, with both nations reaffirming their shared interests in peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
