Vidya Balan Grabs Roles Passed by Tabu, Wins Praise

Tabu and Vidya Balan are widely regarded as two of the most accomplished performers in Indian cinema. However, recent developments suggest an interesting pattern emerging in their career choices.
There appears to be a parallel to the dynamic once seen between Rani Mukerji and Kajol, where Rani often stepped into roles that Kajol had declined. A similar trend now seems to be unfolding, with Vidya Balan taking up projects that Tabu has reportedly passed on.
One such instance was Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, directed by Anees Bazmee. After Tabu opted out, Vidya Balan stepped in to take on the role. A comparable situation has now surfaced with Raja Shivaji, directed by Ritesh Deshmukh.
In Raja Shivaji, the powerful role of Badi Begum—an authoritative and antagonistic queen—was initially intended for Tabu. However, she reportedly declined the offer, choosing instead to be part of Bhooth Bangla, directed by Priyadarshan. Notably, her role in Bhooth Bangla is said to be relatively brief.
Vidya Balan eventually took up the role in Raja Shivaji and is now receiving strong appreciation for her performance, with critics highlighting her commanding screen presence.
These back-to-back developments have sparked conversations in the industry about whether Tabu’s recent choices—possibly influenced by long-standing professional relationships—are leading her to miss out on more substantial, performance-driven roles. Meanwhile, Vidya Balan seems to be capitalising on these opportunities, further reinforcing her position as a powerhouse performer.
