Video: Deepika steps into streets as acid attack victim

Amid her film Chhapaak promotions, Deepika Padukone disguises herself into an acid attack survivor and walked on the streets of Mumbai’s Colaba area to learn the reactions of the people. In her upcoming film, Chhapaak, Deepika is playing the role of Malti, as an acid attack victim, and in the same manner, the actress wore prosthetic makeup and stepped out into the crowd.

The reactions and stares were definitely weird. People did not recognize the actress and was looked upon in a discriminating manner. Deepika visited a flea market and a grocery store in south Mumbai. She was accompanied by other real-life acid attack survivors, who also acted in Chhapaak. This was a social experiment and hidden cameras were on all the way through. Sharing the video, Deepika captioned it as, “Be the change you want to see… A Social Experiment by Team Chhapaak!”

The video starts with all the acid attack survivors, including the disguised Deepika heading into an electronics store and people started staring at them out of social stigma or in a way of disapproval. However, a group of people also asked Deepika for a selfie. The group also met a woman at a jewellery store who had a jovial conversation. A few helped them choose clothes at the flea market.

On the other hand, a few have disregarded when asked for help and some were seen staring them in disgust. Much shocker is when one mother shield’s her child’s eyes when they pass by. At the end of the video, Deepika shares, “Aaj pura din bita k yeh jaanaa ke kuch nazar ke samne hota hai aur kuch nahi. Nazariya badalna zaruri hai.” Now the video is going viral, liked and shared in huge amounts. Also, many praised Deepika for doing a risky job in order to showcase how social stigma has become an ordeal for victims.
