Versatile actor Vijay Sethupathi is currently filming an intense action-packed entertainer with director Puri Jagannadh. While Puri has faced a string of box office setbacks in recent years, Vijay remains unfazed.
“Why judge a filmmaker by their recent failures?” the Tamil star reflects. “I don’t evaluate directors based on their past. If I connect with a script, I go for it. I liked what Puri narrated — it’s a full-on action film, and I’ve never done anything like this before. For me, stepping into unexplored territory is essential. I don’t want to keep repeating myself.”
The film also marks Vijay’s first collaboration with acclaimed actress Tabu. “Yes, she plays a pivotal role. She’s a brilliant performer, and it’s always a joy to work with talented co-stars — especially those I haven’t shared screen space with before,” he shares.
Looking back at his recent hit Maharaja, which performed strongly at the box office and on OTT, Vijay notes its deep emotional impact. “It dealt with the sensitive issue of child abuse. That role drained me emotionally — I felt real anger and disgust, especially as a father. It’s easily one of my toughest performances to date. I gravitate toward films that carry a strong message.”
However, the actor is quick to add that he enjoys variety. “That doesn’t mean I shy away from full-blown entertainers. I have two Tamil releases coming up — Train, directed by Mysskin, and Ace. I’m always looking for stories that challenge me in new ways.”
