As early trends suggest, Vijay is leading strongly in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with many projections indicating that he is on course to become the 9th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. His performance is being widely seen as a major political breakthrough that has significantly impacted both major Dravidian parties.
Vijay’s rise is being compared to legendary actor-turned-politician N. T. Rama Rao, who founded the Telugu Desam Party and created history by becoming Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh within months of entering politics. However, NTR still holds the record for the fastest political rise in Indian history, achieving power just nine months after launching his party.
In comparison, Vijay launched his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam on February 2, 2024, and is now expected to reach power in roughly 27 months, if current trends hold.
Another notable comparison is with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who came to power in around 13 months after founding the Aam Aadmi Party, making him the second fastest in this rare political timeline.
Despite the comparisons, Vijay’s achievement is being seen as remarkable in its own right, as he appears to have defeated both the DMK and AIADMK-led alliances, which traditionally dominate Tamil Nadu politics.
Observers note that his journey was not without challenges, including personal controversies, film-related pressures, and legal scrutiny. Yet none of these factors appear to have significantly impacted his political momentum.
A major factor behind his rise is believed to be strong youth support, which helped translate his cinematic popularity into political strength at the ballot box. Analysts say this marks one of the rare instances where a film star has successfully converted mass appeal into direct political success in a first attempt.
His success is also being contrasted with other major film personalities like Rajinikanth, who opted out of entering politics, and Kamal Haasan, who entered politics but has not yet achieved similar electoral success.
