India’s batting legend, Virat Kohli, announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday, bringing an end to a remarkable career in the longest format. At 36, Kohli reflected on his journey in Test cricket, where he became a symbol of resilience and brilliance, particularly during a period when T20 cricket was dominating the global stage.
Kohli, who played 123 Tests for India, accumulated 9,230 runs, including 30 centuries, at an impressive average of 46.85. He will now focus solely on One Day Internationals, having retired from T20 internationals in the previous year.
In an emotional farewell message posted on his Instagram, Kohli expressed his gratitude: “I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude—for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way.” He added, “It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life.”
Kohli’s last Test series was a disappointing one in Australia, where he managed just one century. Despite not reaching the coveted 10,000-run mark, which once seemed inevitable, his legacy in the format is undeniable. With seven double centuries, Kohli holds the Indian record for the most in Test cricket, surpassing the likes of Sunil Gavaskar (4), Sachin Tendulkar (6), Virender Sehwag (6), and Rahul Dravid (5).
At a time when T20 leagues were taking center stage, Kohli’s presence helped keep the allure of Test cricket alive, with his performances drawing fans back to the format. The iconic Sir Viv Richards also acknowledged Kohli’s unique influence on the game.
