Viveka Murder Case: CBI Probe Likely to Restart

Seven years after the sensational murder of former Andhra Pradesh minister Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) may have to restart the probe from scratch, according to sources.

On Tuesday, the CBI Special Court in Hyderabad reserved its order on a petition filed by Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Dr. Y. S. Sunitha, who sought further investigation into several unanswered aspects of the case. She argued that the CBI has not yet completed a full and conclusive probe.

The development follows the Supreme Court’s directive, which instructed the trial court to independently assess whether additional investigation was required. The apex court had responded to Sunitha’s concerns that the CBI prematurely declared the investigation complete without examining crucial leads.

During the hearing, Sunitha’s counsel stressed that the existing probe was incomplete and posed the risk of letting the true conspirators go unpunished. The counsel urged the court to instruct the CBI to file an additional charge sheet addressing the gaps left in previous filings.

Stating that several “crucial and sensational facts” were still unexplored, Sunitha’s lawyer emphasized that only a thorough, extended investigation could uncover the entire conspiracy behind the murder.

After considering the arguments, the court reserved its judgment and set December 10 as the date for pronouncing its order.

The CBI’s earlier submission to the Supreme Court—claiming that its investigation was complete—had caused deep disappointment within the family. Now, all eyes are on the upcoming court decision, which will determine whether the agency must reopen and expand its probe into the high-profile case.
