The coastal city of Visakhapatnam (Vizag) in Andhra Pradesh has recently become the focus of national attention, following news that several global technology giants, including Meta, Google, TCS, Cognizant, Sify, and Accenture, have partnered with the state government to establish data centers and software development hubs in the city over the coming years, with a combined investment of approximately $60 billion. No other city in India has witnessed such a massive influx of marquee companies investing thousands of crores in such a short period.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and IT Minister Nara Lokesh have positioned Vizag as a future AI city and technology powerhouse, and efforts to realize this vision are already underway. The unprecedented interest from leading tech companies has largely been attributed to Nara Lokesh’s ambitious vision and persistent efforts, which have significantly enhanced the city’s potential in the technology sector.
Soon after taking office, Lokesh pledged to transform Vizag into one of India’s leading tech hubs, comparable to cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, and Noida. A bold policy decision played a pivotal role: allotting government land to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) at a nominal rate of just ₹0.99 per square foot, which catalyzed the city’s transformation.
During a media interaction, Lokesh acknowledged criticism and legal challenges regarding the TCS land allotment but emphasized that the move was instrumental in attracting other leading companies such as Cognizant, Google, Sattva, and Accenture to invest in Vizag.
He described this period as the most exciting time for Vizag to emerge as a major economic and technological hub. Lokesh credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing full support, referring to the government as a ‘Double Engine Sarkar’ driving progress at bullet-train speed. Setting ambitious goals, he stated that Vizag is poised to achieve in 10 years what Hyderabad accomplished in 30, marking a historic transformation in India’s tech landscape.
