Warning to Future Indian Students: Don’t Rush to the U.S

A Reddit user claiming to hold a Master of Science (MSc) degree from a U.S. university has sparked widespread discussion after posting a critical take on the American education system and the growing challenges international students face.

In the viral post, the user warned prospective students to reconsider plans of studying in the U.S. over the next few years, citing concerns such as mental health struggles, limited job opportunities, and financial burdens.

“The coaching mafia is running scams, selling the U.S. as the land of milk and honey. Don’t come to the U.S. for the next 3–4 years,” the user wrote.

They added, “Students are struggling to get jobs. I’ve personally known several Indian students who fell into depression. U.S. universities will take your money, and you’ll be left with massive debt and mental health issues.”

Titled “Don’t come to the U.S. for Studies for the next 4 years”, the post quickly gained traction, especially among Indian student communities on Reddit. Many others joined in with personal stories, echoing concerns about rising tuition costs, limited job prospects, and increasing student debt.

“People used to get three job offers before graduating until 2022. Now, they don’t even have one offer a year after graduating. Come only if you’re rich and willing to take a big risk,” one commenter shared.

Several users shared that even experienced graduates are struggling to secure employment.

“I graduated in 2024, and many with solid experience still haven’t landed a job,” one wrote.

While some agreed with the original post’s grim outlook, others pointed out that U.S. education still holds value—though the path is more challenging than before.

“It’s been tough, but the exposure and learning were worth it,” one commenter replied.

There were also calls for transparency and better policy communication. One user noted, “If the U.S. is your target destination, wait a couple of years. By the time you graduate, policies might be clearer.”

Still, others argued against fearmongering, noting that success is possible, especially for those in top-tier programs.

“Things aren’t as bad as people make them out to be,” one Redditor shared.

Another user highlighted the long-term financial benefits of working abroad, explaining that Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) earn significantly more compared to salaries in India.

This post has reignited broader conversations about the risks and realities of studying in the U.S., especially regarding the job market, immigration hurdles, and mental health of international students.
